Why Beatrice Kitty when my name’s Amanda? Well, Beatrice Kitty was my grandmother’s name, and quite simply, I really like it! I can’t say that she was the one who instilled me with a love for baking and cooking though – I think that came from my father…
From an early age, I was more interested in cooking the sweet stuff than the savoury. I was 11 or 12 when I started to become interested in making and decorating cakes. I won an English competition at school and was given a book token to choose any book I liked. I chose a Mary Ford cake decorating book. She was well known in the cake decorating world at the time, and her book was one of just a few around on the subject – unlike the hundreds of titles available today!
Shortly after flicking through the pages of my Mary Ford cake decorating book, I made my first novelty birthday cake in the shape of a spanner, complete with oil drips – it was for my uncle, a car mechanic! From there, my passion for cake decorating grew and I soon decided to take it up as my profession.
Whilst working in a local bakery covering all aspects of the bakery trade, I also attended college – attaining my City & Guilds qualifications in bakery and patisserie.
Once qualified, I worked in ‘The Cake Shop’ in Oxford’s historic Covered Market, which specialises in celebration, novelty and wedding cakes. After working there for 10 years, I decided to move to Cornwall – a place I’d always wanted to live, work and set up business.
My cakes have certainly evolved since those early days.
My passion now lies in wedding cakes. I just love making them – especially when they’re a little different from the norm! I love being a piece of the puzzle which makes up someone’s special day – including getting involved with all of the hustle and bustle of a wedding venue!
I only take on one or two wedding cake orders a week. This ensures that I can give your wedding cake the utmost care and attention to detail.
Wedding cakes, or a version of them, have been around for centuries and were originally seen as a symbol of fertility and prosperity. In Roman times, bread would be baked, the groom would eat part of it, then break the rest over the bride’s head to ensure good fortune and a blessed marriage. Fortunately, that’s one tradition that we no longer have! As you’ll see below, my cakes are anything but ‘just a cake!’.
I believe that the inside of a cake should taste as good as it looks on the outside. Therefore, I only use the finest ingredients – always free range eggs, the best Belgian chocolate and top quality Swiss sugarpaste.

If you'd like a flavour which isn't listed, please get in touch to discuss your requirements.
If you’d like to taste some of the cake flavours before booking and paying a deposit, I offer a taster box of six flavours for just £30 inc p&p. The £30 will be deducted from any subsequent wedding cake order, if booked within six months.
I can bake gluten free, dairy free and nut free cakes. I do not currently bake egg free or vegan cakes. All cakes are made where dairy, flour and nuts are present, so I cannot guarantee that any cake will be completely free of allergens. However, I will make every effort to ensure that allergies are accommodated.
Classic & Elegant Cakes, as well as some Modern Cakes, require a coating of white chocolate ganache. This is to enable a smooth finish on the outside with the sugarpaste. This does not apply to Rich Fruitcakes, or to Naked/Semi-Naked Cakes, where buttercream is used on the outside.
So, you’ve set the date, you’ve booked the venue and now you need to order the cake. You’ve probably never done this before, you’ve never had to commission such a large and important cake. What flavour should you choose? How big should it be? …relax!
Once you’ve looked through my website, read the blurb and decided that you like the style of my cakes, this is what you’ll need to do…

Once you’re happy with the price quoted, I advise booking as soon as possible in order to reserve your required date. A £100 non-refundable deposit is all that’s needed to secure your order. You do not need to know all of the design details at this stage – this can be discussed at a later date.
I only take on one or two wedding cake orders a week. This ensures that I can give your wedding cake the utmost care and attention to detail.
Once you’ve secured your order, I highly recommend a face-to-face consultation approximately 6 months prior to the wedding. This will allow us to discuss and finalise your design requirements. I will normally meet with you at your chosen venue, however, if this is not possible, I can meet you at your home (locally), or at your holiday accommodation if you’re visiting.
At the consultation I’ll bring a complimentary box of 6 cake flavours for you to take home to sample. We’ll discuss the design details and you can let me have any colour swatches at this time, if required. We’ll also discuss delivery to the venue and the timings etc. All cakes are delivered and set up by myself, giving you complete peace of mind.
If you’re dealing with an event organiser at your venue, it’s also useful for me to have their contact details. Similarly, if you’re having fresh flowers for your cake, it’s useful for me to have the florist’s contact details.
If you’re unable to attend a face-to-face consultation, everything can be done via email or over the phone, with any colour swatches etc being sent via post.
Shortly after the consultation, I’ll supply you with a hand drawn sketch of the cake, for your approval. Hand drawn sketches don’t necessarily apply to Naked or Semi-Naked cakes.
Next, you’ll need to let me know your preferred cake flavour which will be used for the final cake. Once done, you can sit back and relax…
The final balance is due 1 month before the wedding. The cake will be delivered and set up at the venue at the agreed time, leaving you to enjoy your special day!
Choosing a wedding cake may seem daunting, but rest assured, I’m here to help guide you through the process – from start to finish. Therefore, if you have any questions, whether before or after placing your order, I’ll be happy to help. Simply email me at info@beatricekitty.co.uk
